After long silence...
Dec. 3rd, 2012 07:44 pmHi all.
I've been reading, just not posting, since I always seem to lj on my phone now. This is most likely because I've been busybusybusy and not on the computer at all.
Things with Dad are not great. He was making great recovery after his first stroke, but I think he had another very mild one based on his speech and what he's saying about his leg and being able to write. He decided it wasn't safe for him to stay in the house because of the stairs, which is a very good decision in my opinion. He took a lease on a little ground-floor efficiency apartment for $450 a month. It's a bedsit really, no separate bedroom, but has a nice-sized living area, a kitchenette and a bathroom, which is all he wants. However, I have to go up next week and clear out the house. I'll move what he wants to the apartment so he can live there, take what Bruce and I want (like the dining room table! I'll have a table!), and sort the rest for trash/sell/donate. I need to call ahead for a dumpster, and arrange for a charity pickup. The sell items I'll probably craigslist, since garage sales are not a big thing in winter in Western PA.
I'll be very happy to do this for Dad, and to know he's settled, but it is going to be a lot of work, plus a lot of driving with the kids to get there. It's more daunting since I am doing basically the same thing in my house this week. We're having a huge yard sale this Saturday, and I have tons and tons to go out. Bruce has committed to an hour a day this week going through the garages, and is actually amassing a nice-sized sell pile. And we also plan on selling both shooting accessories and guns, since Virginia allows for private firearm sales as long as you do the paperwork properly and copy the buyer's ID.
The reason we are trying to do all of this at once is that we are very close to Bruce getting a written job offer in Pittsburgh. I just need to do the ginormous credentialling application and we will be well on our way to him getting a job at the V.A. It's contract and not direct hire, but it's a very good foot in the door. So the less we have to move the better, and we'll be able to live in Dad's house in Pittsburgh.
