In my yard (admittedly in a different climate than yours -- I live near Seattle), Shasta daisies and coreopsis (esp. threadleaf coreopsis) beautifully fill up a lot of space. Bleeding hearts to go with your hostas in the shade. Coral bells for the hummingbirds. Asters for fall. Hardy geraniums (as opposed to the plants called geraniums in nurseries, which are really pelargoniums -- any good nursery will know the difference). Sedums large and small. Aubrietas for ground cover. Creeping phlox, which is evergreen and blooms in early spring as opposed to your garden phlox which blooms in summer.

Some annuals reseed. Plant them once and you'll have them forever just like perennials. Calendulas, pansies, bachelor's buttons, sweet alyssum, candytuft, to name a few. Iceland and bread poppies. California poppies, too, although once they get started you may not be able to get them to stop. Do not plant love in a mist (Nigella). It will take over the world.

If you do think about butterfly bush, check to make sure that they're not considered noxious weeds in your area (ask your county cooperative extension office). They are considered noxious in a lot of places. The Latin name is Buddleia, which will help you find out. Forsythia is beautiful in early spring and you can easily make more plants from one plant, given time. Flowering quince. More lilacs (you can never have too many lilacs [g]). Cotoneaster is evergreen and does pretty white flowers in spring and red berries in fall. Fringe tree, which is really more of a large shrub. Redbud. Goldenrain tree.

Your yard is gorgeous. I live in a condo with a very small yard. I am jealous. But then I was a horticulture minor in college and I've been gardening for decades, from California to Colorado to Ohio to here. If you want to pick my brain further, feel free. If you were nearby I'd be filling a box with starts for you.
