I have Amadeus on in the background while I fold laundry and, probably because I wasn't listening too closely, got one of the music jokes that I'd missed before.
In the scene where Mozart is presented to the Emperor Franz Joseph, Salieri writes a "march of welcome". Mozart hears it once, replays it perfectly, and then starts improvising on it. By the end of the improvisation he's playing "Non piu andrai" from Figaro.
See, sometimes I do have a clue.
Clip is Bryn Terfel in the 98 Met production (which was actually funny) with Cecilia Bartoli as Susanna, Renee Fleming as the Countess, Susanne Mentzer as Cherubino, and Dwayne Croft as the most attractive Count I've ever seen (really, you start wondering if Susanna should just give in already).
