This is also my first selfie experiment, and my house is very dark, so please bear with me.

I have been trying for years to find a way to do my hair that 1. does not take more than five minutes 2. keeps it away from my face (I have rage fits when hair gets in my way) and 3. stays put through errands, the gym, kids, etc.

I have a big, square, Ukrainian head, so horseshoe-shaped headbands give me an instant headache and the soft loop ones slowly slide back and then pop off. And I just can't get excited about anything that involves a blow dryer or any sort of heat styling.

Then I discovered victory rolls.

As worn by the lovely Veronica Lake.

And as worn by the shiny me:

Now I took these pictures yesterday around nine pm, which means that they had been in for over twelve hours, three of which were spent outdoors at the playground. There is one bobby pin in each of the two rolls. And it takes me five minutes. Victory, indeed!

And I think it's flattering on me as well. (For the love of all that's holy, please tell me if I'm deluding myself!). It reads as vintage-y without screaming "I have me grandmother's hair!!" which is also nice.

I don't think you're deluding yourself at all. It's pretty. I'm just astonished and amazed that it stays up that well for twelve hours after only five minutes and two hairpins.

My hair is so slick and slippery that about the only thing that keeps it out of my eyes is a lot of product and/or putting it behind my ears.

My gran says they all wore their hair in victory rolls in the vacuum tube factory she worked in in the forties, but all the way around instead of just the front the way I do.

That's when I figured it was worth a try. If it holds up to factory work it might survive my kids.

We are at Ukrainian dancing right now, but I will try and find the YouTube video to post when I get home. There are a bunch out there, but this girl explains it away that made a lot of sense to me.

With the curl and texture your hair has, it will probably be a lot easier to work with than my very fine hair.

It's not hard to do exactly, but there is a knack to it.

They look really good on you! I wish I could do them, but I have really curly hair and it would involve blowdrying it straight first. Yeah, no.

Thank you!

Just so you know, most tutorials will tell you to curl your hair first. The more texture your hair has, the easier these vintage styles are to do. And there are a ton of videos and pictures out there of women with very curly hair, or textured hair, or untreated hair who look great with these pinup styles.

I'm totally not just saying this: they look MORE flattering on you than they do on Veronica Lake. Really, I scrolled down thinking, "that sounds like my kind of hairstyle," saw her, thought, "nahhh..." saw you, thought, "Oh yes, actually, very nice!"

Wow, thanks!

Veronica's the original. Hers go all the way around her head and form a v at the nape of the neck. V for victory, and hence the name. The angle is different when you're rolling up all your hair.

Plus you know her hair is back combed within an inch of its life. I do very little teasing, most days I just use a spritz of leave-in shampoo if I need lift at the roots.
